Yesterday, while traveling with my family from Shumen to Sofia, we decided to stop for lunch at one of the well-known roadside restaurants. Grilled meat, flatbread, juice for the kids, and a little pickled salad – nothing special, just a standard lunch for four – two adults and two children, one 6 years old and the other 3. No drinks for us adults.
When the bill arrived, we were shocked – 106 leva. Yes, that was the cost of lunch. At that moment, I thought about how quickly money can disappear and how, for some families, this amount represents a significant part of their monthly budget.
For someone earning the minimum wage, which will be 1,077 leva as of January 1, 2025, this amount equals eight such lunches (after deductions). Eight. This means that if you live on a minimum income, you would need to work an entire month just to afford eight lunches at a simple roadside restaurant with your family.
These moments remind me once again how crucial it is to plan our finances wisely, especially in times like these when life is becoming increasingly expensive. I realize this most when I see how, for many Bulgarians, their entire income is consumed by bills, food, loans, and transport. Nothing extra – just the cost of living. When I started managing finances more carefully – both personal and business – I realized how important it is to involve children in this process from an early age. At school, no one taught me what money is or how to manage it, and at home, the topic simply wasn’t a focus – much like in many Bulgarian families, because our parents weren’t taught this either.
Through BoroBit, my 6-year-old son can already see how our family’s finances are distributed – which expenses go to food, which to bills, and how part of the money is set aside for savings.
