A Shift in How We Think About Personal Finances

No one ever taught us how to manage our personal finances. Or how money actually works.

Not at school, not at home, not at university.

Financial literacy in Bulgaria has always been low. For a long time, managing money was seen as something unnecessary, boring, and secondary. The common belief was that all you needed was a higher salary — and that was it.

But the truth about money isn’t how much you earn — it’s how much you have left at the end of the month.

Among the younger generation (Gen Z), conversations about money are far more common. It’s discussed more openly within families. Businesses focused on personal and family finances are emerging, along with courses and schools dedicated entirely to the topic.

Money is part of our liveswhether we like it or not. That’s why it’s better to take care of it instead of ignoring it. Anyone who allows themselves the luxury of ignoring money ends up paying a high price.

Most of us simply start spending once we begin earning money.

For a long time, the approach was always the same — you pay the bills, buy what you need, sometimes what you don’t, and at the end of the month you see what’s left. Or what isn’t — more often than not. Then you wait for the next paycheck and the cycle repeats.

More and more people, however, are starting to rethink this logic. Our attitude toward money is changing.

They no longer wait until the end of the month to see if their money will be enough. They want to know what their month looks like right from the start.

Not as a precise plan down to the last lev or euro, but as a guideline you can adjust to real life — some months simply come with higher expenses, and that’s completely normal.

It’s becoming increasingly important to be able to quickly understand how your month is going financially.

Not in numbers you have to calculate, but in a way that fits naturally into your daily life — just like checking the weather in the morning, with a single glance you can see whether the month is going according to plan or if your spending is starting to drift into the red.

Instead of tables and calculations, the focus shifts to something else — how you’re doing with your money today, compared to your plan for the month.

And when something doesn’t look right.

You can adjust.

You can fine-tune.

You can move money to where it’s needed.

This also has a purely psychological effect. When you know where you stand with your money — even if you’re in the red — the simple feeling that you’re in control brings a sense of calm. To manage something, you first need to be able to see it and measure it.

Gradually, the way we perceive money itself is changing as well.

They’re no longer just one big pile.

Part of them are meant for the month.

Some are set aside for later.

Some have a specific purpose.

When your money is organized this way, decisions become easier and less emotional. You know what is meant for what. You know what you can spend — and what is better left untouched.

And the choices you make with your money today ultimately shape your tomorrow — something more and more people are beginning to realize.

Every month is different. Expenses change. Plans change too.

That’s why a budget isn’t something you “set and forget”. It can be adjusted when life requires it. That’s not a failure of the plan—it’s part of managing your money.

All of this doesn’t mean thinking about money all day long.

On the contrary — it’s active control that doesn’t require constant attention.

You don’t deal with your finances all the time, but you know your money is organized and that you can see the full picture at any moment, at a glance.
